About this activity
Learning Objectives
Penile prosthesis implantation (PPI) is a safe and effective option for patients with erectile dysfunction (ED). This approach is recommended by the European Association of Urology (EAU) when other management approaches for ED have failed, such as lifestyle modifications and therapeutic approaches with phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors and intra-cavernous injections. With surgical and device innovations, procedures for PPI have become safer, with improved results and high patient satisfaction. However, infections remain to this date one of the most critical complications arising from PPI, which are associated with loss of sexual function, increased healthcare costs, and physical and emotional morbidity for patients.

The goals of this 1-hour roundtable discussion are to:
  • Present the current challenges in preventing the development of penile implant infections
  • Review the perioperative risk factors for the development of infections in patients undergoing PPI
  • Discuss the recommended antimicrobial prophylaxis regimens and their efficacy in preventing infections in differing patient populations
  • Examine the implications of patient-tailored antimicrobial dipping solutions for coated prostheses in preventing PPI infections
