This prospective observational multi-institutional study collected data on 11,885 consecutive patients undergoing ureteroscopy over a one-year period at each of the 114 centres across the globe. It is the largest prospective study on this procedure with re-assuring results. While holmium laser was the most common energy source for lithotripsy (used in 49% of cases), pneumatic device was used in 30% of the cases. The most re-assuring results are that ureteroscopy was associated with a high success rate of 85.6% and a low complication rate of 3.5%; with majority of the complications being Clavien grade I or II. Interestingly, there were very low rates of intra-operative ureteral avulsion (0.1%) and post-operative ureteral stricture (0.3%). This database is a goldmine and many more scientific articles and presentations are expected. Things to watch for include: factors associated with stone-free rates and complications such as ureteral strictures after ureteroscopy.
